Romania Overtime Rules
Romania's standard week is 40 hours. Overtime is first compensated with paid time off; where that is not possible, it is paid with a premium of at least +75% of the basic wage.
- Overtime should be given paid time off in lieu within 90 days; if not, a premium of at least +75% applies.
- Work on weekly rest days or public holidays is typically paid at +100%, plus a substitute rest day.
- Working time may not exceed an average of 48 hours a week including overtime.
This applies the +75% statutory minimum used when time off in lieu is not given; a collective agreement can set a higher rate.
Frequently asked questions

In Romania, overtime above 40 hours a week is paid at a statutory premium of 75%. Higher rates can apply for night, Sunday and public-holiday work. See the rules below for the exact figures.
Yes. In most EU countries a sector or company collective agreement can set overtime rates above the statutory minimum, or replace premium pay with compensatory time off. Always check the agreement that applies to your role.
