How to work out a raise
A percentage raise scales your pay: new pay = current pay × (1 + percent ÷ 100). A dollar raise simply adds a fixed amount. The percentage is the more useful number to compare offers, because it is independent of whether you are paid hourly or annually.
To go the other way — finding the percent from a new figure — subtract the old pay, divide by the old pay, and multiply by 100. Switch the raise type to “dollar amount” above and the tool shows you the equivalent percentage automatically.
Frequently asked questions
For a percentage raise, multiply your current pay by the percent and add it on: a 5% raise on $50,000 is $50,000 × 0.05 = $2,500, for a new salary of $52,500. For a flat-dollar raise, just add the amount to your current pay.
Subtract your old pay from your new pay, divide by the old pay, then multiply by 100. If you went from $50,000 to $53,000, that is (3,000 ÷ 50,000) × 100 = 6%.
