How tipping math works

A tip is simply a percentage of the bill: tip = bill × (percent ÷ 100), and the total = bill + tip. A 20% tip on a $60 bill is $12, for a $72 total. To split evenly, divide the total by the number of people — $72 between 4 is $18 each. The convention in the U.S. is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, so enter that figure if you want to leave tax out of the calculation.

Customary table-service tipping runs about 15–20%, with 20% common for good service. Counter service, delivery, and large-party “auto-gratuity” all vary — when a service charge is already added to the bill, that amount may take the place of a voluntary tip.

Tips, tip pooling & the tipped minimum wage

For workers, tips are also a wage-and-hour matter. Under the federal FLSA, an employer may pay a lower cash wage and count tips toward the minimum wage (a “tip credit”), but tips must bring total pay up to at least the full minimum — otherwise the employer must make up the difference. Employers, managers, and supervisors may never keep employee tips, and valid tip pools have their own rules. Tips are taxable income that employees are expected to report. Several states are stricter than federal law (some require the full minimum wage before tips), so check your state’s rules; the U.S. Department of Labor and IRS sources below are the primary references.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal. A 20% tip on a $60 bill is $60 × 0.20 = $12, for a total of $72. To split it, divide the total by the number of people.

How much should I tip?

In U.S. table-service restaurants, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary, with 20% common for good service and more for exceptional service. Counter service, delivery, and other settings vary. This calculator lets you set any percentage.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the common convention, since the tax is not part of the service. Enter the subtotal as the bill amount if you want to tip pre-tax; enter the after-tax figure if you prefer to tip on the total.

How do I split a bill with a tip evenly?

Add the tip to the bill first, then divide by the number of people. A $72 total split 4 ways is $18 each. This tool shows both the per-person total and each person’s share of the tip.

What is tip pooling, and is it legal?

Tip pooling is when tips are combined and shared among staff. Under the federal FLSA, employers, managers, and supervisors may not keep employees’ tips, and rules differ depending on whether a tip credit is taken against the minimum wage. See the U.S. Department of Labor guidance below, and check your state’s rules, which can be stricter.
